"I think in a few years’ time we’ll see an entirely new focus regarding social networking and business: It will be considered to have been a serious wrong turn…" David Scott, CIO/Fortune 100 IT professional, author: I.T. WARS: Managing the Business-Technology Weave in the New Millennium.
Here is a pretty good take on the issue of social media in the workplace, as viewed from the corporate Information Technology chair. Scott doesn't reject such use, but he does make a good case for why it must be managed. When an employee is telling the boss why, for instance, Facebook will be benign or even beneficial at work, this is what the boss is hearing in the other ear from the Chief Information Officer.
This blog serves as my "electronic field journal" in which I document my thoughts, experiences, and observations relative to a concentrated exploration of how social media may be used to support human and even organizational performance. This investigation is undertaken in the context of a graduate course at Florida State University in Summer of 2010, "EME6635 Web 2.0-based Learning and Performance". Your participation is welcome, so please feel free to share your own thoughts and questions!
